‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ turned out to be quite simply one of the best shows of 2017. Starring Rachel Brosnahan of ‘House of Cards’ fame as the enigmatic, charming, and inexplicable Miriam “Midge” Maisel, the show is a period drama, set in the 1940s and 1950s in Manhattan.
The show opened to critical acclaim and bagged two Golden Globes, and Amazon Prime Video naturally renewed it for a second season almost immediately after it aired the first. The quirky characters, the wonderful music, and witty, appealing writing easily make it one of the most mature comedy series to have come out in recent times.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Cast: Who’s in it?
Rachel Brosnahan plays the role of the titular character, Miriam Maisel, who is a Jewish housewife with a knack for stand-up comedy. Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle play the roles of Miriam’s parents, Abraham “Abe” Weissman and Rose Weissman. Meanwhile, Alex Borstein plays Susie Myerson, Miriam’s manager, and Michael Zegel plays Miriam’s estranged husband, Joel Maisel, who leaves her for his secretary. A pleasant feature of the show is that while it primarily revolves around Miriam, other characters, too, get enough screen time as each major character has their own short story arcs.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Plot: What is it about?
The show primarily centers around Miriam’s life in 1950s Manhattan. An energetic and sharp young woman, Miriam is portrayed to be a character who has her ambitions in life mapped out. With plans of going to college, finding a husband, having kids, and making delicious breakfast, Miriam soon finds herself living the life she had always dreamed of. Happily married to Joel, who has dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian, Miriam also has two kids, before her seemingly perfect life takes an unexpected turn.
Miriam’s world goes topsy-turvy after Joel suddenly leaves her for his secretary. Utterly unprepared for Joel’s unforeseen departure, Miriam finds herself at the bottom of a bottle in The Gaslight Cafe in Manhattan. In a drunken stupor, Miriam then delivers an impromptu stand-up set at the cafe, and confesses her predicament to the audience. It is here that we first see Miriam’s potential for stand-up comedy after her bawdy, sharp, and brilliant delivery leaves the audience enthralled.
With her newfound talents, Miriam then teams up with an employee of The Gaslight Cafe, Susie Myerson, and sets out to become a stand-up comedian herself. With Joel out of the picture, Miriam and her two kids move in with her parents, Abe and Rose, and Miriam takes up a job in the cosmetics department of a high-end department store. While Miriam’s income is guaranteed from her job, she continues to perform as a stand-up comedian on the side, without the knowledge of her parents.
