Originally titled ‘El desorden que dejas,’ ‘The Mess You Leave Behind’ is created by Carlos Montero, who has also written the hit Netflix series ‘Elite.’ When Raquel joins the school in Galicia, she learns a dark secret about a person who once occupied the same position in school as her. Based on Montero’s eponymous award-winning novel, the thriller drama packs various themes such as trust, desperation, longing, and redemption into one riveting drama. ‘The Mess You Leave Behind’ season 1 landed in its entirety on December 11, 2020, on Netflix. The first season comprises eight episodes of 35-56 minutes each.
Here is what we know regarding the second season. The final episode of season 1 lays out all the cards and offers a conclusive resolution to each of the characters. Also, the makers haven’t announced any plans for continuing the story. We believe that taking both the factors into account, The Mess You Leave Behind’ season 2 is most likely cancelled.
The Mess You Leave Behind Cast: Who is in it?
The storyline revolves around the link between two women- Raquel (Inma Cuesta) and Viruca (Bárbara Lennie). Mauro (Roberto Enríquez) is Viruca’s husband and a teacher at the same school where Raquel has now replaced Viruca. Raquel is going through a rough patch with her husband, German (Tamar Novas). Iago (Arón Piper) is a student at the school who gets caught up in a mess between Viruca and his father, Tomas (Alfonso Agra). Other cast members are Roque Ruiz (Roi), Isabel Garrido (Nerea), and Xosé Antonio Touriñán (Gabriel).
The Mess You Leave Behind Plot: What is it About?
The first season sees Raquel’s interest in Viruca’s death spiraling almost into an obsession. As she gets closer to the truth, she becomes more fearful for her life and ultimately cannot trust anyone. By the end of season 1, all secrets are out, and Raquel is about to face the same fate as Viruca. Iago has a change of heart since he too is done being used by Tomas as a doormat.
It is revealed that Tomas had pushed Iago into prostitution from a very young age, which takes a toll on him. This is what Iago had shared with Viruca, who used the evidence to blackmail Tomas. The final episode ends with Tomas and his accomplice, Gabriel, being arrested. Raquel quits her job and decides to move back into her mother’s apartment and write. She and German finally part ways but stay on good terms.
In an interview with Variety, Carlos Montero spoke about the inspiration behind the series and said, “We are always dealing with bullying between students, and yet many teachers can tell you about when they feeling attacked by students and being afraid of even going to class. That is terrifying when someone tells it in the first person. So, I wanted to talk about that, the arrival of a young teacher in a place where she is received with hostility, without knowing why.”
