There have been a lot of shows on politics, most (in)famous of them being Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’. There have also been tongue-in-cheek satires like ‘Veep’ that have done an excellent job of being socially and politically relevant while winning hearts and awards. Not exactly in the league of ‘Veep’, but Ryan Murphy and Netflix so a pretty good job in bringing to us another political satire in the form of ‘The Politician’.
‘The Politician’ follows the career trajectory of a young man who, someday, wants to become the president of America. The series has been created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. They also executive produce the show alongside Ben Platt. It is another in line of the successful shows created by the Murphy-Falchuk duo, like ‘Glee’, ‘Pose’, ‘American Horror Story’ and ‘Scream Queens’.
The first season of the show was met with critical acclaim. Now the question is, will there be The Politician season 2? Here’s everything we know.
The Politician Cast: Who’s in it?
The central character of ‘The Politician’ is Payton Hobart, a high school student who dreams of becoming the president of the United States. He is played by Tony Award winner, Ben Platt. Primarily known for his work in theatre, he has appeared onscreen in ‘Will and Grace’, ‘Pitch Perfect’ and ‘Ricki and the Flash’.
An Academy Award and a Primetime Emmy winner Gwyneth Paltrow plays the role of Payton’s mother, Georgina Hobart. She is best-known for playing the role of Pepper Potts in Marvel Cinematic Universe, and has also worked in films and TV shows like ‘Shakespeare in Love’, ‘Glee’, ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ and ‘Seven’.
Powerhouse performer Jessica Lange plays the character of Dusty Jackson. The winner of the Triple Crown of Acting, she has previously collaborated with Murphy in the various seasons of ‘American Horror Story’ and in period drama ‘Feud’. Zoey Deutch plays the role of Infinity Jackson. She is known for her roles in ‘Vampire Academy’, ‘Before I Fall’, ‘Set it Up’ and ‘Everybody Wants Some!’.
Additional cast includes Lucy Boynton (‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) as Astrid Sloan, Theo Germaine as James, Laura Dreyfuss as McAfee, Julia Schlaepfer as Alice, David Corenswet as River Barkley, Rahne Jones as Skye and Benjamin Barrett as Ricardo. Bette Midler, Judith Light, January Jones and Dylan McDermott appear as recurring characters.
All the main cast members are expected to return for season 2.
The Politician Plot: What’s it About?
Politics is a dirty game, and it is more often destructive than not. You have to be made of a different fibre to pursue a career as a politician. I don’t want to say that all politicians are power-hungry morons who will do whatever it takes to maintain their dominance, but I am tempted to say this about a lot of them. The question now is, what drives a person’s political ambitions? Where does their journey begin and what battles do they fight to make it to the top? What events in their lives define who they are and what they stand for?
If there is one thing Payton Hobart knows for a fact, it is this- he is going to be the President of the United States of America. He doesn’t know how, he doesn’t know when, but it is going to happen, and he will do everything in his power to make it come true. Coming from a wealthy and influential family, he doesn’t have a limit on the resources he can spend to further his cause. And he intends to use all of them to be the next Student Body President. He is full of vigour and he is hopeful, he has done everything right and victory seems right around the corner. But then, trouble ensues. His running mate is caught up in a social media trail, owing to a homophobic comment she made some time ago.
On top of that, another contender emerges and appears to be as ruthless as him, if not more. There are skeletons in Payton’s closet and if he intends to start on the path that he dreams for himself, then he must not let his secrets come to light. In addition, he must also find a way to dig up the grave where his competitor hides her dark stuff because let’s be honest, no one is made of gold here. A power struggle stirs in the high school, with everyone ready to raise the stakes a notch higher. How far will they go to get what they want?
In season 2, you can expect a new challenge for Payton; a new hurdle in his political path, a new rival to keep him on his toes.
The Politician Season 2 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?
‘The Politician’ Season 1 premiered on September 27, 2019. From accurately portraying the recent college admission scandal to being a biting satire about the roots of politics, the show is full of relevant themes apart from being highly entertaining.
A second season is already in the pipeline as Netflix had given a two-season straight-to-series order back in February 2018. Not long ago, Murphy and Netflix entered a hefty collaboration of five years and considering Murphy’s previous works, we wouldn’t be wrong to assume that ‘The Politician’ will be a huge success and will go well beyond the second season if that’s what Murphy has planned for. For now, our best guess is that ‘The Politician’ Season 2 might release sometime in September, 2020.
