‘The Shack’ is a 2017 American Christian drama based on the 2007 novel of the same name, written by William P. Young. The movie deals with a man who goes through a crisis of faith and depicts how he regains faith after a chance encounter. Faith is something that is constantly needed in our lives, although in today’s world, humans are hard-pressed to put faith in anything blindly. ‘The Shack’ shows the way in which we can rediscover ourselves, only if we believe. Upon release, the movie went on to become a commercial success, with critics praising the message that ‘The Shack’ tries to convey, even though it could have been presented in a better way. Nonetheless, you must be wondering where you can watch ‘The Shack’. We are here to tell you that, but first, let us walk you through the plot of the story.
What is The Shack About?
‘The Shack’ tells the story of Mackenzie “Mack” Phillips who used to suffer physical and emotional abuse as a child at the hands of his father. His mother used to be treated in the same way and the plot implies that as a 13-year-old boy, he planned to poison his father using strychnine. The plot then makes a jump to Mack’s adult life and we see that he is leading a fulfilling life with his wife, Nan, and their three children Kate, Josh and Missy. However, Mack’s life is completely shattered when Missy, their youngest child, disappears during a camping trip, while Mack is busy saving Josh and Kate from a canoeing accident. Naturally, the police get involved and they come to the conclusion that Missy has become the victim of a serial killer, after they find her torn dress along with blood, in an empty cabin. Kate ends up blaming herself for Missy’s death because it was her reckless behavior that caused the canoe accident.
Meanwhile, Mack’s life and faith are completely derailed by the incident. It remains so until winter arrives, which is when he receives a typewritten and unstamped note in his mailbox. Although Mack tries to find out who sent it, even the surrounding area is covered with snow, and devoid of any incriminating tracks. More importantly, the letter is signed ‘Papa’, that is, Mack’s nickname for God. It invites him to meet at the cabin. Mack believes this might be a chance for him to meet and capture, or even kill the serial killer. However, when he arrives at the cabin, he finds it cold, empty and desolate. Overcome with rage and frustration, there is a tender moment when Mack considers turning the handgun on himself. At this moment, he encounters a mysterious trio of strangers who extend an invitation to him to stay at their little house, which is just down the path. Surprisingly, the house is cozy and well furnished. More importantly, it seems to be situated amidst beautiful sunshine and summertime wilderness.
Eventually, the trio of strangers reveals their identities. It appears that the purpose of the invitation was to help Mack understand his life, coming from a broader or higher perspective. Upon realizing it, Mack does not feel the inclination to pass judgment on himself or others who cross his path. From this point, Mack realizes that he must begin his journey of healing himself and his family. He also realizes that he must forgive not only himself but also those who have harmed his loved ones if he wishes to tread the path of salvation.
