‘The Tick’ is an American web television series based on cartoonist Ben Edlund’s comic book character of the same name. The pilot episode premiered on August 18, 2016, and the show has been made for Amazon Video. Josephson Entertainment, Amazon Studios, and Sony Pictures Television are the production companies backing the show, while Peter Serafinowicz and Patrick Warburton act as producers. Ben Edlund himself is on board as an executive producer along with David Fury, Barry Josephson, Wally Pfister, and Barry Sonnenfeld.

‘The Tick’ focuses on a stronger narrative, realism, humor, and high-octane action sequences. All of these combined has garnered positive reviews from the critics and audiences. The critics appreciated the series for its likable characters and the heart and humor of the show. There are indeed very few superhero comedies out there and ‘The Tick’ is a welcome addition that leaves the audience in splits.

For those unaware, the 2016 series is a reboot of the 2001 sitcom of the same name that aired on Fox. It marked the first attempt at a live action reproduction of the comic on-screen. Viewers should familiarize themselves with the history of The Tick in comics, to get a better idea of the show as well. ‘The Tick’ was created by Edlund when he was only 18 years old. In 1986, the character was merely intended to be the newsletter mascot of the New England Comics chain of comic book stores in Boston. However, once it was created the character began to gain popularity and spun off to an independent comic book series in 1988. Soon enough Fox picked it up for an animated TV series in 1994, not to be confused with the live-action series which aired in 2001. The 1994 series had a great run and IGN  lists this character, who is a spoof of American superheroes, on number 57 of their list of the Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time.

The Tick Cast: Who is in it?

The main cast of ‘The Tick’ includes Peter Serafinowicz as The Tick, who is the protagonist and hero of the show. Griffin Newman appears as Arthur Everest, The Tick’s sidekick, along with Valorie Curry as Dot Everest, Brendan Hines as Superian, Yara Martinez as Miss Lint or Janet, Scott Speiser as Overkill or Esteban, and Jackie Earle Haley as The Terror. The main cast is bolstered by the presence of strong supporting actors who make the show rich and interesting.

The Tick Plot: What is it about?

‘The Tick’ is set in a world where superheroes have been real for decades. A mild-mannered accountant, Arthur, falls in league with the strange blue superhero who goes by the name The Tick. The premise of the show is that this character is invulnerable and tries to stop crime in the city while attempting to oust the cover of a shadowy criminal who seems to pull all the strings in the underworld. In a surprising twist, it would appear that The Terror, a villain long thought to be dead, is smack dab in the middle of all the shady dealings.

The Tick must stop this villain and maintain law and order in the city using his superpowers. Coming to the question of powers and abilities, The Tick has nearly unquantified powers. We know for sure that he has super strength and super mass, so much so, that he can accidentally cause damage to his surroundings if he is not careful. However, the show makes a twist to the actual superhero’s origins because he does not seem to know how he has his powers. What stands out in the show is how The Tick deals with people in his everyday life apart from being a superhero, and how Arthur copes with the role of stepping up to be a sidekick. As Arthur embraces his destiny as a superhero from an accountant, one cannot help but feel that the show is a lot about where destiny takes us.

Edlund, who is personally involved in making the series, agrees, and it would be remiss not to mention how his involvement and original vision, as the creator benefits the show. He spoke about this to Collider saying, ” Weird. Cool. Good. It’s very strange. This is a weird … I’d say if I was on the outside of this, I would be interested in this because it’s a strange phenomenon of one creator repeatedly returning to a thing in a variety of different mediums and sort of being allowed to do that. I don’t know. It’s been sort of very fortunate kind of cyclical evolution and relationship that The Tick‘s had with an audience that started in a newsletter and then became a comic book audience, and then there’s a variety of people for whom the cartoon is kind of woven into their childhood memories as a Saturday morning cartoon sort of ritual kind of thing, or as a stoner college ritual”.

We had hoped that ‘The Tick’ would keep the laughs going and make things more interesting by taking a harder look at Tick’s origins and what makes him tick, pun intended. We were definitely interested in knowing what drove Tick to become a superhero, to understand his motivations better. Will our hopes ever get materialized? More on that below.

The Tick Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘The Tick’ Season 2 premiered on April 5, 2019. As far as the next season goes, we have bad news for the fans. On May 15, 2019, Amazon announced the cancellation of the show. The Amazon series’ creator Ben Edlund revealed the news on Twitter. “I’m sorry to say Amazon has chosen not to proceed with [‘The Tick’],” Edlund wrote. “I’m not sorry to say I love this show, its cast, its story, and its message. Destiny demands that my compatriots and I now seek a new home for this series.”

Considering the declining viewership of the show, it was expected that Amazon may not continue for another season. Though, fans should not lose all their hopes. There’s still a possibility that some other network picks up the show. If that happens, we will update you about ‘The Tick’ Season 3 release date.
