How did Tim Duncan earn his money and wealth?
Tim Duncan is a former professional basketball player. He was born Timothy Theodore Duncan on April 25, 1976, in Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He grew up with two sisters and a brother. Jim loved to swim from an early age and hoped to become an Olympic-level swimmer like his sister Tricia. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo spoilt the only Olympic size pool on the island. He lost his enthusiasm for swimming and started playing football after being inspired by his brother in law. He started playing basketball when he was in the ninth grade and played for St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School. He later joined Wake Forest University’s basketball team, Demon Deacons under the guidance of Coach Dave Odom. He played exceptionally well during his college days and went on to win John Wooden Award, USBWA College Player of the Year and Naismith College Player of the Year. He studied psychology during his graduation and was termed by his professor as an intellectual student. He and his siblings had promised their mother before she died that they would all finish college. He graduated from college in 1997 and was eligible for the NBA draft that year.
Duncan joined the San Antonio Spurs in the 1997 NBA draft. David Robinson, their best player along with Duncan made a formidable team who were known as the “Twin Towers”. He played very well and made a reputation of being a good and reliable player on the team. He was voted by the coaches to the 1998 NBA All-Star Game. He was elected to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team as well as named the NBA Rookie of the Year. After the retirement of captain David Robinson in 2003, Duncan took over as the leader of the Spurs. He continued to play for the Spurs and led the team to many wins. He retired on December 18, 2016, after which the Spurs retired Duncan’s No. 21 jersey in the postgame ceremony.
Duncan has been selected for the United States national team for the World Basketball Championship in 1998. He also qualified to play at the 2000 Sydney Olympics but unfortunately, a knee injury forced him not to play at the Olympics.
Duncan has won much recognition and awards as a player as well as a team. He was named “100 Greatest Professional Basketball Players of the 20th Century” by the Association for Professional Basketball Research. He won the IBM Player Award in 2001-02 along with The Sporting News MVP Award. He was declared the NBA Player of the Decade by Sports Illustrated.
Duncan opened BlackJack Speed Shop in San Antonio, Texas as he has a passion for cars. It kept him busy during NBA lockouts, offseasons and now during his retirement. Duncan married Amy Sherrill with whom he has two children: daughter Sydney and son Draven. They were divorced in November 2013. He and his longtime girlfriend Vanessa Macias gave birth to his third child, son Quill.
