How did Tom Ford earn his money and wealth?

Thomas Carlyle Ford is a jack of all trades from being a fashion designer to a film director, screenwriter, and film producer. He is responsible for directing not one but two academy award nominated movies “A Single Man” and “Nocturnal Animals”. He was born to parents Shirley Burton and Thomas David Ford who were both realtors. His childhood was spent in Houston, Texas, as well as San Marcos. He shifted with his family to Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 11. There, he attended St. Michael’s High School and after a while transferred to Santa Fe Preparatory School. He graduated in 1979.

He joined Bard College at Simon’s Rock at the age of 16 but left it soon after. He decided to move to New York City and attend New York University (NYU) to study History which he did. He dropped out from here as well a year later and went on to pursue acting in commercials. He learned he was gay from his visits to Studio 54 in New York. Born on August 27, 1961 in Austin, Texas, Ford started his career in fashion by working for American designer Cathy Hardwick for two years before moving to Perry Ellis, where he also worked for two years and finally left for Milan in 1990 where he was hired by Gucci as the chief designer for women’s ready-to-wear. He was declared the creative head of Gucci in 1994 and the company which was almost bankrupt before his joining valued more than $4 billion at by 1999.

After Gucci acquired Yves Saint Laurent in 1999, he was also appointed as its Creative Director and he managed to pull another label into the light. He finally left Gucci in 2004. In 2006 Ford launched his own brand “Tom Ford” with a line of menswear, beauty, eyewear, and accessories. His brand has dressed some of the most influential and popular people which include the likes of Michelle Obama, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Daniel Craig, Ryan Reynolds, Tom Hanks, and Hugh Jackman are just a few names. Tom Ford has also associated with A-listers Anne Hathaway, Johnny Depp, Ryan Gosling, Jon Hamm, and Henry Cavill.

Ford’s name also features in a Justine Timberlake song “Suit & Tie” which was released in 2013. In the same year, Jay Z also came out with a song titled “Tom Ford”, which mentions his name numerous times. Ford opened a production company in 2005 called Fade to Black. His directorial debut “A Single Man” was a huge success and managed to get nominations across all the platforms including best actor nomination for Colin Firth at the Oscars, Golden Globe, Independent Spirit Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award.

Ford’s second project was “Nocturnal Animals” starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie was very well received by the critics and Ford’s visual and narrative skill was considered one of the reasons for its success.
