Tom Holland To Star In Russo Brothers’ New Movie, ‘Cherry’

Tom Holland is set to reunite with the Russo brothers for a new film titled ‘Cherry’, as first reported by Variety. Anthony and Joey Russo are best known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Tom Holland recently joined in the role of Spider-Man. The Russo brothers’ next film is ‘Avengers: Endgame’ which releases on April 26, 2019, and is bound to be a hit. The film will see the culmination of their work in the MCU up to this point.

Naturally, this will open the doors for new avenues of expressing the Russo brothers’ creativity. This is where ‘Cherry’ comes in. What we know of the film is that it is going to be a true life adaptation based on Nico Walker’s semi-autobiographical novel that shares the same name and was the New York Times bestseller. The story follows an Iraqui war veteran who served as an army medic. Upon returning home, he begins to struggle with both post-traumatic stress disorder and opioid addiction. He is forced to resort to robbing banks in order to fund this addiction which eventually results in him being captured and imprisoned. While both the narrator and protagonist of the story remains unnamed, the events are based on Walker’s experiences. For those unaware, Walker is currently serving time behind bars where he has been since 2013 but will be out by 2020, when the film is releasing and will have the opportunity to see Holland play the part on the big screen.

While this is the fourth non-Marvel film by the Russo brothers after ‘You, Me and Dupree’, ‘Welcome to Collinwood’, and ‘Pieces’, it will be the first feature film that the Russo brothers are going to take up after their immensely successful ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers’ franchises within the MCU. They acquired the rights to ‘Cherry’ through AGBO studio for $1 million, as Deadline had reported, and the film’s script has been written by Jessica Goldberg, famous for ‘The Path’.Holland became an obvious choice for the film since the Russo brothers had already worked with him on ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘.

Apart from ‘Cherry’, the Russo brothers have several other projects lined up on their plates, although many of these will see the brothers working behind the scenes as producers. Among their upcoming projects is the TV adaptation of the 1979 cult classic movie ‘The Warriors’, and a series adaptation of ‘Little Nightmares’, the horror video game. For Holland’s part, he will, of course, be returning next as Peter Parker or Spider-Man in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘ when the film releases on July 5, 2019. He will also presumably return to help the Avengers take down Thanos in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland has several other upcoming commitments including lending his voice to ‘Spies in Disguise’ that comes out this September. As for 2020, Holland has several releases coming up that includes ‘The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle’, ‘The Devil All the Time’, ‘Chaos Walking’ and ‘Onward’, a movie by Disney/Pixar.
