Tough as Nails Cast: Host And Contestants

‘Tough as Nails’ is hosted by Phil Keoghan, a renowned television personality, notable for presenting ‘The Amazing Race‘ on CBS. The creator of ‘No Opportunity Wasted’ is a Primetime Emmy winner as well. Keoghan explained his inspiration behind coming up with ‘Tough as Nails’ in the show’s press release, saying:

“I was inspired to create Tough As Nails almost a decade ago because of my working-class family of farmers, gold miners, builders, and coal miners. I’m proud of my family and wanted to shine a light on people who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty to do a hard day’s work. Now, more than ever, it is important for all of us to recognize this country’s essential workers: real people in real life who are really tough.”

In season 1, Keoghan is joined by 12 participants, selected via casting calls that were held in November 2019 across six cities and online. These hardworking Americans consist of Callie Cattell (a fisherman from Oregon), Danny Moody (a drywaller from Washington), Kelly “Murph” Murphy (a Marine Corps veteran from Indiana), Lee Marshall (a roofer from Missouri), Linda Goodridge (Deputy Sheriff from New York), Linnett Key (a welder from Florida), Luis Yuli (a scaffolder from New York), Melissa Burns (a farmer from Ohio), Michelle S. Kiddy (a gate agent from Kentucky), Myles V. Polk (a forestry tech from Alabama), Tara Davis (an ironworker from Washington), and Young An (a firefighter from Virginia).

What is Tough as Nails About?

‘Tough as Nails’ tests competitors at real-world job sites with challenges that are designed to stretch their strength, endurance, skills, and mental prowess. One contestant is disqualified from participating in the finale at the end of each episode. However, there are no eliminations and every participant is given options to win additional prizes during team competitions. In the grand finale, the winner is crowned as the Tough as Nails Champion and takes home a grand cash prize of $200,000 and a Ford Super Duty truck.

CBS outlined the show’s concept in its press release, describing it as follows: “Tough As Nails is about competitors who wear the callouses on their hands as a badge of honor” … “The series aims to redefine what it means to be tough — proving toughness comes in all shapes and sizes. It will celebrate Americans who roll up their sleeves all day, every day without thinking twice about long, hard hours or getting their hands dirty if it means keeping the country running.”
