Venus Williams, real name Venus Ebony Starr Williams, was born on 17 June 1980 in Florida, US to Oracene Prince and Richard Williams. She has 4 sisters, with her being the fourth child. When the family moved to Compton, Venus and her younger sister Serna Williams got the chance to try the game of tennis. Both the sisters were able to enhance their skills for tennis under the guidance of Rick Macci. When Venus was merely 11 years old, she went on to become the number 1 player among the under-12 players in South California. However, due to racial slurs and comments coming from society, she had to withdraw her name from the academy. Later, their father took the responsibility to teach both his daughters at tennis on his own.

She later went on to win many other tournaments in 1999 against some of the topmost tennis players like Steffi Graf, Lindsay Davenport, Mary Pierce among others. In 2000, she won 35 consecutive singles and 6 tournaments and also went on to defeat Martina Hingis and won the Wimbledon, marking her first singles Glam Slam victory. The year 2000 helped Venus earn six titles and a world ranking at number 3.

In the year 2001, Venus defended her title in both, the US Open as well as Wimbledon and became the 6th woman in the history to have won the titles for two consecutive years. In the year 2002, Venus attained the World number 1 ranking and became the first ever African-American woman to have taken such an iconic position. She went on and earned another peak after winning her fifth Grand Slam in women’s doubles title at Wimbledon.
