Where to Stream Vikings?

When it comes to historical dramas, most television shows focus more on the drama than the historical accuracy. However, ‘Vikings’ is a refreshing exception. The action/adventure show from the History Channel has some of the finest storytelling you’ll ever see, and it does not shy away from portraying characters and events in their true light, without concerns of whether it will be palatable to us in the 21st century.

You might not know a lot about Viking history except for the fact that it was cool enough for Led Zeppelin to have written a song on it. In that case, ‘Vikings’ is here to educate you about their settlements and their exploits. The chief focus is on a real-life hero, who has to maintain peace among the warring clans and carry out expeditions in treacherous seas, all for a hope of a better life, and perhaps a seat at Odin’s table in Valhalla.

Read on to know where you can watch ‘Vikings’, but before that, allow us to tell you a little bit about the story of ‘Vikings’.

What is Vikings About?

‘Vikings’ tells the story of Viking conquests over time, including the first bloody raids that took place on the English soil. The story squarely follows our hero Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) on his adventures. He is one of the best known Viking heroes and is known as the scourge of France and England. We are given a glimpse into how this man rose from the ranks of a humble farmer, to become famous by conducting successive successful raids in England. Eventually, he also becomes a Scandinavian king with the support of his fellow warriors and his family. Not only is this man a fearless warrior, but Ragnar also manages to embody all the Norse traditions that depict their devotion to the Gods. If you think this is a mere man destined for greatness, then you are wrong, because legend has it that Ragnar was a direct descendant of Odin himself, the Norse god of wars and warriors.

Therefore, we see this legendary man try and maintain peace between all the warring Viking clans, which is no mere feat in itself. To top it off, he also has to contend with the wrath of the lord he has an allegiance to while balancing foreign kings and treacherous seas at the same time. Soon, he begins to rise through the ranks and becomes noticed by several others. Most importantly, he is at direct odds with his lord, who wants to go to the impoverished east instead of the uncharted west.

However, under Ragnar’s command, the civilization and their entire way of life changes. With a rise in power, comes a crisis of faith, and Ragnar finds that his friends and foes are constantly shifting as new alliances are made. His relationship with his wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) is threatened as plots are hatched for power, all under the watchful eyes of the Norse gods. Once Ragnar manages to get to the shores of England, he longs for something more, and as the epic saga continues, we see him attempt to rally all the Vikings to penetrate Paris, which is said to be impenetrable by outside forces. This is their chance to cement the Vikings’ place in history.

After Ragnar’s conquests, the show moves on to follow the adventures of his sons, all heroes in their own rights, as they carry on the exploits in the Mediterranean, England, and Scandinavia. However, Ragnar’s death causes major upheaval and a civil war breaks out to see who becomes the next king, resulting in a lot of bloodshed and violence which the latest season of the show successfully captures. If you are wondering about how accurate the show is, it begins at the start of the Viking Age and shows the Lindisfarne raid in 793. It actually follows some Viking texts, which contain details of the exploits, so you can be sure that you are watching an accurate but partly fictionalized version of events as they unfolded in history.
