He played the role of Slim Davis on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow premiered in 1959. He did a cameo on an episode of the western Johnny Ringo.
Rogers featured along with Robert Bray and Richard Eyer in the Stagecoach West, a western series, which was aired on ABC for 1 year, from 1960-61. Rogers was appointed as Army Lieutenant Richard Henry Pratt of United States in 1965, later of the Carlisle Indian School. In the series, Death Valley Days, in the episode “The Journey”. Robert J. Wilke played the role of Sergeant Wilks, who advocates a more strict treatment of Indian inmates than does Pratt. When Rogers was contacted for M*A*S*H, he planned to audition for the role of Hawkeye Pierce. He found the character too pessimistic, however, and asked to give audition for Trapper John, whose character was brighter. Rogers was informed that the characters of Trapper and Hawkeye have equal weightage.
This altered after Alan Alda, whose acting career and résumé was better and appealing than that of Rogers, was cast as Hawkeye and proved to be more popular with the viewers. Rogers liked working with Alda and the rest of the cast as a whole, but ultimately rubbed that the writers were devoting the show’s best challenging and cherishing moments to Alda. On the 30th Anniversary of M*A*S*H* in 2002, Rogers spoke on the conflicts between the Hawkeye and Trapper characters, saying, “Alan and I both used to discuss ways on how to differentiate the dissimilarities between the two characters as to where there would be an alteration. My character was a little more unwary than Hawkeye.”
