Created by Ben Hoffman, ‘Hoops’ is an adult animated comedy series about a foul-mouthed and ill-tempered underachiever (Jake Johnson) who teaches basketball at the local high school. As the principal of the school points out, he only has the job because of his father, a former NBA star and affluent business owner. Coach Ben Hopkins is well aware of how dismal his team is and doesn’t miss a chance to mock them. This is when he spots Matty, a 7-feet-tall social pariah who just might be his key to unlock the doors to the big leagues. Since its release, ‘Hoops’ has received predominantly modest reviews. If you are already done binging it and are curious about when the next season is coming out, we might have an answer for you. Read on!

Hoops Season 2 Release Date

‘Hoops’ Season 1 premiered on August 21, 2020, on Netflix with ten half-hour episodes. As far as the next season goes, here’s what we know. Netflix has not made any announcements yet on a second season. But the good news is that historically Netflix has been kinder to animated shows and greenlit them for multiple seasons. Since first season of ‘Hoops’ has generally been well received, there’s a good chance Netflix will give the next season a go-ahead. And if that happens, you can expect Hoops season 2 to release sometime in 2021.

Hoops Season 2 Cast: Who Is n It?

The show’s stellar cast is led by Johnson (‘New Girl’, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’). After the man has been active in the industry for over a decade, it’s safe to say that no one plays cranky, cynical characters with as much relish as him. Cleo King (‘Dreamgirls’, ‘The Hangover’) portrays his exasperated and pragmatic boss, Principal Opal. Natasha Leggero (‘@midnight’, ‘Another Period’) stars as Shannon, Ben’s estranged wife who is sleeping with his best friend. Ron Funches (‘Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh’, ‘Powerless’) plays Ron, the aforementioned best friend as well as Ben’s assistant on the basketball team. A. D. Miles is Matty, Ben’s prodigious disciple. Rounding up the cast is Rob Riggle (‘The Daily Show’, ’21 Jump Street’) as Barry Hopkins. James’ condescending but well-meaning father.

All members of the main cast will likely return in the next season.

Hoops Season 2 Plot: What Is It about?

Set in the fictional town of Lenwood, Kentucky, most of the comedy in ‘Hoops’ stems from how exhausting and miserable its protagonist is. This is further accentuated by the people around him, who, despite being surprisingly normal in comparison, genuinely care about him. Ben is a narcissist with a delusion of grandeur, and each of his actions of self-improvement leads to utter humiliation. When he finally convinces Matty to leave Lenwood High with him for a better school and thus securing a position for himself there, he can’t help but call the students, school staff, and his estranged wife to the gym to gloat in front of them. The season ends with Ben cursing his luck after getting a flat tire while leaving the town.

On his way out of the town, Ben gleefully burns all bridges with his family, friends, and students. This likely will come back to haunt him in the next season. Shannon comes off as the most balanced character in the show, and it was a pleasant surprise to see that the producers gave her a moment of happiness when she realizes that Ben is probably out of her life for good. Expect her to be more actively involved in the main storyline in season 2.

One thing is for sure, Ben will not be at Henderson Prep for long. And when he inevitably comes back to Lenwood, it will be interesting to see how far he has changed, if at all.
