Who is Captain Marvel, Explained

I think by now, we’ve all managed to watch Avengers: Infinity War. Captain Marvel is the next game changer that the post credit scene teased us with. Nick Fury in a last-ditch attempt calls her before disappearing thanks to Thanos and his antics with the Infinity Gauntlet. However, before Captain Marvel appears in the next Infinity War movie, she will have her own film that will provide her backstory, her powers and establish her as a superhero before she takes on the big bad guy in the Infinity War movie.

Fans are already going crazy over the introduction of one of the strongest Avengers in the MCU and its making waves because this is the first MCU movie about a standalone female superhero so they have to live up to and go beyond the noise DC made with Wonder Woman. Before we go to watch the film we are all stoked about let’s turn to see who is Captain Marvel.

Identity and Family

Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel. She was slated to appear in Age of Ultron but was removed because MCU felt that she needed a backstory before being introduced, which is reasonable since her story will look into a previously unexplored section of the Marvel Universe. She was also supposed to appear in Jessica Jones the television show but her role was replaced by that of Trish Walker.  Played by Brie Larson in the film, Danvers is a skilled pilot at the Air Force who went on to join the CIA where she first met Nick Fury. Her career later took her to NASA where she met Captain Marvel, or Mar-vell, the Kree fighter.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Danvers first appeared in the comics in 1967. Her known relatives are her parents Joseph Danvers Sr. and Marie Danvers, and her siblings Joseph Danvers Jr and Steve Danvers (deceased brother). Danvers has been part of various supergroups apart from doing her own thing in the long list of appearances in the comics. Kevin Feige has introduced Danvers as one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this moment.

Backstory

The Captain Marvel mantle wasn’t first worn by Carol Danvers. In fact, there have been eight Captain Marvels in the comic universe. Danvers’ character was first set off as a love interest to Captain Marvel the Kree warrior. However, after an accident which is usually a large motif in superhero creation, Danvers found the human and Kree genes infusing in her body to give her the powers of Captain Marvel. Half Kree half human Danvers was created by an accident from Psyche Magnetron a machine that helped turn thoughts to reality.

However, Danvers’ previous training as a fighter pilot and a CIA agent makes her a formidable opponent even without powers, and the woman has fought alongside Logan so you know you don’t want to mess with her, powers or no powers.

Powers

Classified as a Power Level 8 according to Nick Fury’s intel, Danvers as Captain Marvel has a wide range of powers which include:

Superhuman Strength: Danvers can at any time use more strength than the average human but what is more striking is that she can absorb power from different energy sources giving her the potential to use even greater amounts of strength that she had access to as the super form called Binary.

Superhuman Stamina: As Binary, her super form she could fight up to twenty-four hours without being fatigued, but her ability to channelize and absorb energy sources allows her to fight longer without getting tired.

Superhuman Durability: Marvel can take a punch on the jaw and come out smiling. She can withstand high caliber bullets, falls from great heights exposure to extreme temperatures. Her genetic restructuring allows her to enjoy this power.

Superhuman Speed: It goes to reason that Danvers is faster than an ordinary human due to her genetic changes. Her maneuverability is greater as is her sense of balance.

Superhuman Reflexes: As Binary her reflexes were instantaneous. However without the Binary powers too her reflexes are at least twice as fast as ordinary humans.

Flight: Danvers possesses the ability to flight and as Binary she can fly in space vacuum without any aid.

Hyper cosmic awareness: Think of it as Spidey-sense but much more accurate. Danvers could through this power anticipate the moves of all her opponents, a truly formidable power in battle.

Enhanced Immunity: Her Kree-human physiology makes her resistant to a lot of toxins and poisons.

Photonic Blasts: The greatest of her offensive powers is the access to the photonic blast which we can assume will be something like Stark’s Iron Man’s blasters but much stronger of course.

Energy Absorption: Her ability to absorb energy is what makes Danvers so powerful and enhances all her other abilities. Apart from her superhero powers, she is also a trained spy and multilingual, she is a talented journalist and a master pilot and combatant.

Film Setting

The film will be starring Jude Law as Mar-vell and Brie Larson as Danvers. The setting is in 1990 and during the intergalactic war between Kree and Skrulls. This might give us a good insight into the Ronan angle of it, remember the fanatic in Guardians of the Galaxy? However, we can’t wait to see an intergalactic war and we expect fully to be dealing with some extent with the quantum realm which was first explored in Ant Man. The film will set up the source of Captain Marvel’s powers and show her backstory which will also probably explain her absence from some of the earth’s greatest battles in the MCU.

However, we fully expect a fantastic film and cannot wait for Danvers to appear in the Infinity War sequence because she will be instrumental in bringing down Thanos. The film is set to be released in the theaters on March 8th, 2019 and we simply cannot wait for the iconic female superhero to blaze the screens.
