‘Wu-Tang Clan’, which has released five gold and platinum albums to date, is considered as one of America’s most influential hip-hop bands. In fact, their 1993-released album, ‘Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’, is branded among the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Originally composed of members, including RZA, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa, they are known for their hardcore style, unique sound, and distinctive image.

Documenting the evolution of this band is the fictional drama, ‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’, based on ‘The Wu-Tang Manual’ and ‘Tao of Wu’. The series is inspired by the true story of the Clan and transports us to New York during the early 1990s — when the Crack Cocaine Epidemic was at its heights. It traces the formative years of Wu-Tang through the eyes of Bobby Diggs (RZA), who brought together a dozen of young, black men, conflicted between music and crime. However, RZA’s vision finally became a reality and we witnessed one of the rarest American success stories.

‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’ is created by RZA and Alex Tse. RZA and Tse are also the executive producers, alongside Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo, and Method Man. Imagine Television serves as the production company. Wu-Tang is Imagine’s second project on Hulu after its Emmy- and Grammy-winning music-themed documentary, ‘The Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years’.

Wu-Tang An American Saga Cast: Who is in it?

‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’ stars Ashton Sanders (‘Moonlight’, ‘Native Son’) as RZA, Shameik Moore (‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘) as Raekwon, Johnell Young as GZA, Siddiq Saunderson (Messiah) as Ghostface Killah, Joey Bada$$ as Inspectah Deck, Dave East as Method Man, and TJ Atoms as Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

Wu-Tang An American Saga Plot: What is it about?

‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’ chronicles the genesis of one of the most influential and consequential groups in the history of hip-hop history, namely the Wu-Tang Clan. It is based on ‘The Wu-Tang Manual’, penned by RZA, which introduces the philosophy and evolution of hip-hop’s original forefathers. The series is also inspired by ‘Tao of Wu’, the second book from RZA, that follows the formation of the Wu-Tang Clan.

This fictional depiction of true events from the books is set in 1990s New York when the city was dealing with the Crack Cocaine Epidemic. However, amidst the anarchy, there was one man, Bobby Diggs aka RZA, who wanted to unite a dozen of very disoriented, young African Americans — torn between two paths, a career in music vs life of crime. However, after his determined efforts, they finally banded together to create one of America’s most successful hip-hop clans. As the episodes unfold, we meet the younger versions of the Wu-Tang Clan members, such as The RZA, Raekwon, GZA, Ghostface Killah, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, and Inspectah Deck. All of them are, of course, being portrayed by different actors. But this retelling of events does bring in a whiff of the 90s nostalgia.

Dubbed as historical fiction, ‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’ is a combination of things that actually happened and dramatization of additional events. Some of them are depicted as they took place in their original timeline, while others have been shuffled around a bit in order to fit the narration. But as per Tse, “spiritually it’s very truthful and accurate.” According to RZA, “Since everything is based in reality, it’s more the timeline [that’s changed]. You can’t take every moment, so you condense the moments like concentrated grape juice and the audience pours water onto it.”

Wu-Tang An American Saga Season 1 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’ premieres on Hulu on September 4, 2019. The first three episodes of the drama release on the same day. After that, it follows a weekly schedule of airing one episode every Wednesday, until it completes its entire run of 10 episodes.

According to the creative team, the show was not conceptualized as a limited series. They added that they would love to do “multiple seasons”. Hence, if the series receives favorable reviews, it won’t be wrong to say that we can expect another season soon enough!
